Warm winter means more golfers

LAWRENCE - Come cold or warm, they will golf.  PGA professionals at local courses say Lawrence golfers are hitting the links more this winter than they have in the past 20 years.

Even though the grass is dead and the greens aren’t very green, many golfers at Eagle’s Bend in say this is their passion and they are sticking to it. Golf pro Tyler Henderson said this year, Alvamar Golf Course was played 1,420 times in the month of January.  So far for February, 635 rounds have been played.

Jon Zylstra of Lawrence Country Club says they hit a record with 640 rounds in January and they are expecting to have that many rounds played in February as well. Eagle Bend hosts about 170 rounds on a busy summer day.  This year, they hosted 120 rounds on a busy winter day.

Greens keepers said the only thing that will keep these avid golfers off the fairway is frost. Otherwise, nothing will hold them back.
