Lawrence police investigate allegations of inappropriate conduct

Earlier this week, 6News was the first to report that two Lawrence police department workers have been suspended after allegations of inappropriate conduct. We're now learning more about what's happened.

According to a source, the allegations involve two high-ranking officers.

Police Chief Tarik Khatib wouldn't confirm this information, but did say, "There are a whole range of employee activities that may warrant an internal investigation. Generally they would involve some sort of violation of city or department policies, rules or regulations. Suspension does not mean finding. It's in reference to the administrative status of an employee while an investigation is pending."

The source suggested that an outside agency might be conducting its own investigation. We contacted the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. A KBI spokesman says his agency can't confirm or deny the status of an investigation until it's made public.

Det. Mike McAtee, who serves as a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Officers' Association says, "LPOA members understand and believe in the process set forth by the city commission, in regard to its employees. The LPOA membership is confident there will be a thorough investigation and the appropriate actions will be taken to maintain the confidence the citizens of Lawrence have in all city employees."
