Lawrence hospital sees sudden baby boom

LAWRENCE - There's something strange going on down at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. An unusual amount of babies are being born, and now the hospital is working overtime to handle the baby boom.

One day-old Gabriel Scott Thomas is one of more than two-dozen babies born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital since Friday. Even though his mother says the birthing experience went smoothly, behind the scenes the staff is busier than ever. From the newborn photographer to the nurses and physicians, almost everyone is working extra shifts and putting in overtime.

The birthing center is used to about 20 babies a week. In the last five days, they've had 36 babies. An abundance of babies can be fun, but no one knows why they're all coming at the same time. The staff joked about what was going on 40 weeks ago and candidly questioned if something triggered labor.

Gabriel certainly decided it was time to have a birthday. He came five weeks early, just in time to join the fun and keep the staff at LMH on their toes.
