LAWRENCE - On a chilly Thursday night, a group of about 20 people sweat it out in Lawrence's Centennial Park, hitting eachother with styrofoam weapons. It's called boffer fighting.
It's a sport that gained popularity years ago, but just within the last year has really caught on in Lawrence. The movie 'Role Models' helped draw attention to the the medieval role playing.
Organizers say the objective is to have fun. The Lawrence group calls itself Emberfeld. The fighters describe their battles as short and energy-filled.
The goal on the field is to kill your opponent, one limb at a time. Although they fight with padded swords and axes, they say it can get rough, so you've got to be 18 or older to participate.
They encourage people to join them during their weekly battles at 7 p.m. Thursday in Centennial Park.
